Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS) announced the selection of Gilead Sciences, Inc. as its preferred cloud provider, a biopharmaceutical company that develops innovative medicines to prevent and treat life-threatening diseases. Gilead’s data scientists benefit from the latest advancements in machine learning (ML) and analytics using AWS and AWS experts and partners in life sciences and healthcare.

Gilead uses these capabilities across its entire organization, from biomarker discovery to manufacturing and clinical trial recruitment, to drive data-driven decision-making and refine its drug pipeline. In addition, the company relies on AWS to host all of its enterprise resource planning (ERP) workloads for its SAP S/4HANA implementation project.

Cloud computing is transforming Gilead’s bioinformatics compute infrastructure. By leveraging AWS’s compute, machine learning, and database capabilities, Gilead will be able to integrate diverse genomics, imaging, and experimental datasets to find new ways of diagnosing and treating illnesses. Gilead, for example, is able to uncover insights on how patients living with cancer respond to existing treatments by securely analyzing de-identified genomic data at scale on AWS to reveal patterns, potentially accelerating the discovery of new treatments.
Also in Gilead’s IT organization, AWS is used to host all workloads on behalf of its ERP transformation project to implement SAP S/4HANA. These systems facilitate performance-critical activities in areas such as finance, operations, and commercial sales across all therapeutic areas and business units. AWS provides Gilead with a foundation for implementing SAP S/4HANA, as well as a means of shortening hardware refresh cycles, improving testing agility, and enhancing business planning.
